Students learn in a variety of ways and through a multitude of experiences. While the college accepts transfer of credit form accredited institutions, it also recognizes that students may possess the knowledge and/or skills through other experiences that, when reviewed, may be equivalent to college credit. This is called Prior Learning Assessment.
Students may petition for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) for any course offered at Dallas College, provided they meet the enrollment requirements.
The college recognizes credit recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE), which may be accepted for transfer credit if they align with an active course offered by Dallas College.
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)
Dallas College may consider the following in the review, assessment, and evaluation of learning and award academic credit per administrative and academic standards:
- College transcripts
- Licenses
- Professional certifications
- Workplace training and credentials recognized in workforce
- Military training
- Experiential learning
- Standardized exams and testing
- International Baccalaureate Diploma
- Learning from institutions not formally accredited
- Independent learning
- Third party organizations crosswalks and recommendations
Credit, certification, or advanced standing may be earned when an authorized assessment is satisfactorily verified and approved. Students are responsible to petition for a prior learning assessment and all Dallas College policies will apply.
While there are no limits to potential credits earned through PLA, at least 25% of the credit hours required for graduation must be taken through instruction at Dallas College and not awarded through credit for prior learning or transfer of credits.
Credit awarded through prior learning assessment will be transcripted once a student has earned a passing grade in at least three (3) semester credit hours through instruction at Dallas College. Credit earned through prior learning assessment will be coded as “CR” on the student’s transcript and cannot be calculated into the GPA.
Additional CPL Guidelines:
- Enrollment Requirement:
- Students must have completed at least 3 credits at Dallas College with a passing grade.
- Students must be currently registered in the term during which they are requesting CPL.
- Applicability:
- CPL may be awarded for coursework completed outside a student’s declared Program of Study.
- The coursework must fulfill requirements for the student’s current degree or certificate.
