Children on Campus

The institution strives to provide an environment most conducive to teaching and learning for all enrolled students, including student parents. Unless otherwise provided, this policy does not apply to persons under age 18 who are enrolled in Dallas College for academic credit or who have been accepted for enrollment, participants in organized/scheduled Dallas College activities, or who are working as employees of Dallas College.

Children in Classrooms

In general, minor children, individuals under age 18, should not be brought into classrooms, laboratories, or other instructional spaces on campus. In certain cases, where the student-parent has no alternative but to bring the child to campus, a student parent may, prior to the start of the class session, request permission from the faculty member to allow the child to enter and remain in the classroom during the class session.

Faculty have full authority and discretion to allow the child of a student parent access to their classroom, provided doing so would not, in their opinion, be disruptive to the learning environment, and/or to remove the student parent and their child if either the student-parent or child engages in behavior that is deemed inappropriate, disruptive and/or in violation of established Dallas College policies and procedures.

Exclusion Zones

Minor children are not permitted in the following areas without the permission of an “authorized administrator” of Dallas College: power plants, mechanical rooms, food preparation areas; any Dallas College areas, indoors or out, containing power tools or machinery with exposed moving parts or rotating equipment; laboratories; or specialized work areas that include but are not limited to chemicals, biological hazards, radioactive hazards, flammables, explosives, compressed gases, sharp objects, lasers, hazardous wastes or other environmental hazard. For purposes of this paragraph, an authorized administrator is a Dallas College administrator aged 18 years or older who is responsible for supervising, chaperoning or otherwise overseeing minors as part of an established Dallas College program or activity and who has the appropriate training and background for the performance of such duties.

Permitted Zones

When accompanied by a student parent or legal guardian, minor children are permitted in those areas of campus that are deemed non-instructional, including, but not limited to: student-service spaces, staff offices, open interior and exterior spaces, libraries, and other non-instructional spaces.

Texas Law requires a person who witnesses, suspects or receives a report of child abuse or neglect to report it to the appropriate authorities. Reports of suspected child abuse or neglect can be made to the Texas Department of Family Protective Service or any local law enforcement agency. For on-campus emergency, call (972) 860-4290; for off campus emergencies, call 911.
