The Interior Design Department offers a 2-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Interior Design. In addition, an Advanced Technical Certificate in the third year provides the student with a Professional Certificate in Interior Design. Please refer to the TBAE memo to clarify El Centro’s Interior Design Program’s status for licensing eligibility located on the Interior Design Program website.

An Interior Designer is an individual who identifies, researches, and creatively solves problems relating to the functions and aesthetics of the interior environment, including issues pertaining to life safety. The Interior Designer must possess specialized knowledge in interior construction, equipment, materials, furniture, and building codes.

Formal training in Interior Design prepares the individual to begin work as a design assistant and to possibly progress to full professional status and independent practice. In order to be fully licensed as an Interior Designer with the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners, one must have an appropriate combination of formal education and practical experience, and must also pass a formal examination administered by the NCIDQ.

El Centro campus is accredited Interior Design Program follows a rigorous, strict, and sequential listing of course work which increases with difficulty as students progress through each of the six semesters. Each design studio course in this sequence builds upon the knowledge and skills gained from previous design courses and are required to be taken in the order listed in the campus catalog.

Students who do not complete the courses within their first semester will require a minimum of 6 semesters or 3 years for completion of the Associate Degree. Additionally, students who elect to begin their studies in the spring semester will require an additional year to complete the degree.

Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all INDS courses in order to advance through the program. Students must pass a computer literacy exam to enroll in the Interior Design Program.
