Dallas College offers multiple credit and non-credit pathways for students aspiring to become early childhood and/or K-12 educators. These pathways have been mapped to and/or are aligned to recognized industry credentials so that program completers are well-prepared to enter the teacher workforce. Our teacher educator pathways are centered around providing paid, work-based learning opportunities for students that also include access to high quality mentorship and coaching from School of Education leadership and faculty. Our programs are uniquely designed with our early childhood centers and school district partners in mind giving our students a seamless pathway to a career as an educator.
The Bachelor of Applied Science Early Childhood Education and Teaching (BAS ECE) degree program is focused on preparing students to teach young children from birth to third grade. The BAS ECE recognizes the critical development that occurs for children in those early years is a period that lays the foundation for lifelong learning. Therefore, the BAS ECE is intentionally focused on developing early childhood educators for Dallas County. BAS ECE graduates will be prepared to provide early learners with intentional experiences and responsive relationships while helping close the achievement gap for lower-income children.
Students who complete this degree will also be prepared to seek careers as lead classroom teachers, teacher aides or program specialists in early childhood education private school settings, afterschool programs and early childhood centers such as Early Head Start, Head Start, non-profit preschools, and private infant/toddler programs. Students in the BAS ECE program also have a pathway to earning educator certification through our Dallas College Educator Preparation Program.
The Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degree is an academic program of study that sets a student up to complete their bachelor’s degree as well as earn their teacher certification. The AAT degree provides students with a seamless transfer to several regional universities in Texas offering bacherlor’s degrees in education. The degree also seamlessly transfers to the Dallas BAS ECE program. Students interested in becoming educators are encouraged to meet with a School of Education Sr. Success Coach (SOEAdvising@DallasCollege.edu) directly to learn more about options that best meet their academic and career goals.
Teach at Dallas College ACP, formerly known as Mountain View ACP is an approved alternate certification program and post-baccalaureate route to teacher certification in Texas. At this time, Teach at Dallas College ACP is only accepting applications from candidates currently enrolled in the Dallas College Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education and Teaching program. Past graduates of the program are also eligible to apply. Teach at Dallas College ACP delivers high-quality educator preparation using a teacher internship model based on exploration, hands-on experiences and inquiry-based practices. Program coursework is student-focused and aligned to The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, English language proficiency standards, Pre-K Guidelines, where applicable, and to the Texas educator standards. Specifically, Teach at Dallas College ACP carefully addresses reading instruction in language and literacy courses and instruction in the educators’ code of ethics, mental health, substance abuse and youth suicide, and dyslexia. Digital learning, including a digital literacy evaluation, is addressed in educational technology coursework. Candidates have ongoing, supported opportunities to use the skills being developed, with corresponding benchmarks in growth required and tracked through performance-based assessments in each course. Relevant and aligned internship experiences correspond with each phase to ensure opportunities for practice throughout the program.
